Mr. Shupe is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, an experienced trial attorney, a member of Schnader's Executive Committee, and immediate past chair of the Firm's Litigation Services Department. Previously, he chaired the Firm's Aviation Group and its Product Liability Group. His practice concentrates on representation of international, national, and regional companies in a wide variety of commercial, product liability, and business litigation matters. A retired Air Force command pilot, in aviation matters he represents domestic and global aircraft, engine and aircraft component manufacturers, airports, airlines, insurers, Part 135 operators, Part 145 repair stations, and corporate aviation. He has tried to verdict a wide variety of matters. Mr. Shupe 's pro bono focus is in support of a variety of military veteran causes and as a Board Member of New Leash on Life USA, a nonprofit focused on training and socializing abandoned dogs to enhance their adoptability, and building prison inmate social and job skills to improve the likelihood of successful re-entry into the community. In his aviation practice, he has represented domestic and foreign aircraft, engine and component manufacturers, airports, airlines, air taxi operators and corporate aviation in connection with aviation and railroad accidents. Representative matters include: · National counsel for aircraft component manufacturer in multidistrict litigation arising from the 2008 crash of a Spanair MD-82 aircraft in Madrid, Spain; · Lead counsel for one of the world's leading aircraft engine manufacturers in nationwide litigation arising from a variety of helicopter crashes, including a military helicopter crash in Iraq; · Co-lead counsel for a defense contractor in litigation arising out of a multiple fatality aircraft crash in Afghanistan; · Lead counsel for one of the world's leading helicopter component manufacturers in actions arising from the fatal crash of an Army Air National Guard helicopter; · Co-lead counsel for a Part 135 charter operator in litigation arising from a multiple fatality crash in Owatonna, MN in 2008; · Lead counsel for one of the world's leading international manufacturers of thrust reversers for transport category aircraft in a commercial dispute in a Florida federal court involving tens of millions of dollars of alleged damages; · Lead counsel for an aerospace insulation blanket manufacturer in federal multidistrict litigation arising out of the crash in 1998 of Swissair Flight 111; · Lead counsel for a manufacturer of diacetyl in litigation alleging diacetyl-induced lung disease; · Lead counsel for an international engine manufacturer in litigation arising from a helicopter crash in Brazil; · Lead counsel for an FAA Part 145 Certified Repair Station in litigation arising out of the fatal crash of a Cirrus SR22 aircraft; · Co-lead counsel for a helicopter manufacturer in litigation arising from the fatal crash of a U.S. Navy MH-53E in Sigonella, Italy; · Lead counsel for an avionics company in a multi-fatality general aviation crash involving a Mooney M20U aircraft; · Defended the engine manufacturer in multiple wrongful death suits arising out of the crash of the developmental V-22 Osprey titltrotor aircraft in Virginia; · Defended the owner/operator of a Bell 412 helicopter involved in a mid-air collision over Merion, Pennsylvania, in the death of a U.S. senator; · Defended a helicopter engine manufacturer in state and federal court litigation involving a wide range of commercial, tort and RICO claims; · Counsel for one of the world's leading manufacturers of general aviation and corporate aircraft, and multiple aircraft/engine component manufacturers, in state and federal court actions nationwide in litigation alleging product defects and noncompliance with federal aviation regulations; and · Lead counsel for one of the world's leading international airlines in litigation involving personal injury, baggage and cargo loss, and damage claims.
