Biography

Background

Pitman Patterson is a partner in our Toronto office. Pitman was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1996 and graduated from the University of Toronto Law School in 1994.

Prior to law school, Pitman received his M.A. in 1990 from the University of Toronto, and a B.Sc. (Hons.) in 1989 from Trinity College at the University of Toronto, both degrees concentrating on quantitative environmental subjects.

Areas of Practice

· Pitman practices administrative law and civil litigation with an emphasis on planning and development law, municipal law and expropriation law. He also has experience in environmental and real estate litigation.

Professional Experience

· Counsel in proceedings before the Ontario Municipal Board, Joint Board, all levels of Ontario's court, and mediators and arbitrators.

· Represents public and private sector clients in a diverse range of planning and development charges matters throughout Ontario, including submission of development applications, assembling consultant teams, negotiation and presentations, and committee of adjustment appearances, OMB appeals and cost sharing arbitrations.

· Experienced in preparation of all forms of development agreements, including cost sharing, subdivision, site plan, pre-servicing and front-ending agreements.

· Provides legal opinions under the Municipal Act, 2001 and related legislation, particularly related to servicing and financing.

· Negotiation and litigation services provided to expropriating authorities and landowners in expropriation cases of varying complexity, including Ataratiri, the Yonge/Dundas Redevelopment Project, 400 series and Regional highways, the Sheppard Subway extension and major land assemblies.

· Member, BILD and Urban Land Institute, Toronto council

· Royal Commission on the Future of the Toronto Waterfront (subsequently, Waterfront Regeneration Trust) - formerly a project co-ordinator for projects including restructuring of public waterfront land ownership; preparation of new provincial remediation guidelines; and other land management and environmental initiatives
