JACOB A. DOUGHTY, head of the firm's Tokyo, Japan office, is an attorney in the firm's Chemical Patent Prosecution group, focusing on patent preparation and prosecution for leading U.S., Japanese, and European companies. He is experienced in all facets of patent procurement, including application drafting, ex parte prosecution, ex parte appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (BPAI) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and post-grant proceedings. Mr. Doughty also has extensive experience in areas other than patent preparation and prosecution, including patent litigation and licensing.
A USPTO registered patent attorney, Mr. Doughty counsels his clients in diverse technologies including imaging devices, optical films and coatings, glass products, cosmetics, light-emitting materials, nanomaterials, ceramics, polymers, alloys, materials/electronics manufacture, substrate production and processing, lithography, deposition and etching, petrochemical processing, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
Mr. Doughty counsels his clients on numerous issues, and frequently opines in the areas of patent infringement, validity and enforceability. He advises his clients with respect to strategies to commercialize their innovations to their business advantage, including providing guidance in the area of pharmaceutical life-cycle management. Mr. Doughty has specialized experience in procedures for obtaining patent-term extension for regulatory review and procedures for obtaining expedited examination of patent applications.
Mr. Doughty frequently provides continuing legal education presentations and client trainee courses in various areas of U.S. patent law, including claim construction, infringement, application of prior art, applicability of the Patent Cooperation Treaty, obviousness-type double patenting and expedited examination.
Before joining the firm, Mr. Doughty was an associate with another Alexandria, Virginia intellectual property firm.
