Jim Duke is a Litigator and Partner in the Edmonton office of Miller Thomson. His practice focuses on problems and opportunities which arise in the areas of commercial, insurance, construction and employment law. Mr. Duke's broad practice extends to a variety of industry sectors including energy, finance, manufacturing, transportation, mining, forestry, municipal, construction, and technology. In pursuit of this diversity, he has authored or supervised numerous research reports, studies and major legal opinions involving complex legal and social issues, often drawing upon interdisciplinary resources with economists, accountants, engineers and related professionals.
Mr. Duke practices as a barrister with appearances before all levels of Alberta and Federal Courts. This experience, coupled with the ability to draw upon specialized practice areas within the firm, where appropriate, enables Mr. Duke to respond to each client's individual requirements in a dedicated, timely and cost effective manner. His pragmatic and personal approach is the foundation of enduring client relationships, many of which span his career.
More recently Mr. Duke has provided general Counsel to a number of emerging First Nation organizations in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Drawing upon extensive commercial experience, Mr. Duke consults regularly with those clients who may require day-to-day input on new business opportunities, resource management, intergovernmental relations, municipal infrastructure, employment relations, employment policies, preventative policies and procedures, and multi-disciplinary services. Providing these emerging associations with competent and cost effective advice has become the hallmark of his practice.
