James C. "Jim" Crigler, Jr. is a member in the firm's Monroe office. He utilizes his extensive experience in agricultural law to provide legal services to producers, lenders, landowners, tenants, and agri-businesses. He also advises political subdivisions on a variety of issues including governance, employment and transactions.
Jim serves on the Council of the Louisiana State Law Institute which recommends legislation to the Louisiana legislature to modernize and improve existing laws. He also serves on the Registry Committee which drafted and presented to the Council proposed sweeping new legislation governing the filing and recording of acts of sale, mortgages, leases and other real estate documents. This proposal was adopted by the Council, submitted to the Louisiana legislature and enacted as Act 169 of 2005.
Government
Jim advises governmental entities on a variety of issues including governance, transactions, employment, eminent domain and leasing.
Agricultural Law
Jim assists clients in obtaining and retaining eligibility for a variety of farm subsidies. This may involve selection and creation of appropriate business entities, advice on proper operation of farm enterprises and representation in administrative appeals and federal court.
Corporate Law
Jim represents producers and agri-businesses in the creation and operation of various types of business entities including corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships.
Real Estate
Jim represents creditors and borrowers in transactions involving the sale and purchase of farm, recreational and commercial property. He works with the firm owned title insurance company to offer title insurance to owners and to lenders.
Estate Planning - Wills and Trusts
Assisting farm families with planning designed to preserve family assets for next generation is another legal service that Jim provides to clients.
