James McCartney is counsel in our Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions Group in Toronto. His practice focuses on financings, take-over bids and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. McCartney has extensive experience in the mining area. Recently, he has acted in several major financial restructurings.
Mr. McCartney has been involved in the following transactions:
· acted for The Bank of Nova Scotia on its purchases of National Trustco Inc. and Montreal Trust Company;
· acted for Sportsco International L.P. on its purchase of Skydome;
· advised Confederation Life Insurance Company with respect to its financial difficulties and Gulf Canada Resources Limited on its recapitalization;
· led the team of lawyers who represented Algoma Steel Inc. in its restructuring and financings; and
· represented Noranda Inc. in its acquisition of Falconbridge Limited and its sales of Canadian Wire and Cable and MacMillan Bloedel Limited.
Mr. McCartney appears in the 2004 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, as a leading lawyer in the area of mining. He also appears in Legal Media Group's 2005 Guide to the World's Leading Energy and Natural Resources Lawyers.
Mr. McCartney is a director of a number of Canadian public companies. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and International Bar Association.
Mr. McCartney received his B.Comm. in 1961 and his LLB in 1964, both from the University of Toronto. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1966.
