Jim Morand is a partner in our Tax Group in Toronto. The focus of his practice is corporate tax, with particular experience in structured financial products, investment vehicles and restructuring of distressed companies.
Mr. Morand regularly assists clients on innovative financial products, including income trusts, derivative instruments and asset securitizations. He also regularly advises on M&A transactions, with particular focus on income trusts.
Mr. Morand has significant experience in the reorganization of financially troubled companies. He has advised on many significant restructurings, including Algoma Steel, Stelco, AT&T Canada and St. Mary's Paper.
Mr. Morand is listed in the 2011 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, as a leading practitioner in the areas of income funds and investments funds and asset management. He is also listed in 2010 Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers for Business as a leading lawyer in the area of tax. Mr. Morand is listed in the 2012 Best Lawyers in Canada in the field of tax law.
Mr. Morand has authored tax papers and commentaries for Lexpert, the International Tax Review, CCH - Focus on Current Cases, European Counsel and other publications; lectured in taxation at the Bar Admission Course of Ontario and the University of Toronto, and is a former member of the Taxation Steering Committee of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada.
Mr. Morand received his B.Comm. in 1984 and his LLB in 1987, both from the University of Windsor. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1989.
