Biography

James Szerejko is a veteran federal court litigator, having actively practiced in the District Court for over twenty-five years. He has served as lead counsel in numerous jury trials taken to verdict, and has argued cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

His experience in federal, as well as state court litigation has been varied and extensive, including land use, employment, civil rights, statutory and constitutional issues and claims exposing litigants to punitive damages.

James has been a member of the Federal Grievance Committee for the District Court of Connecticut and serves on the District's Magistrate Judge Merit Review Panel. He has been active with committees of the Federal Practice Section of the Connecticut Bar Association.

Since 1995 James has been certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (based upon accomplishment and testing). He is also an Emeritus member of the Oliver Ellsworth Chapter of the American Inns of Court, having served as a Master for five years.

Within the public sector he has served in numerous capacities. His government experience includes the Legislative Commissioner's Office for the Connecticut General Assembly, as well as Deputy Counsel for the Senate Majority. He has been a member and Vice Chair of the Connecticut State Board of Education, Chairman of the State's Criminal Justice Commission and James served as a member of the Connecticut Medical Examining Board. James was an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Hartford. He also served as counsel to the Hartford Redevelopment Agency, and was a member of the Hartford Charter Revision Commission.

James has been involved in a number of community organizations throughout the years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Renewal Team of Greater Hartford and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Hartford Legal Aid Foundation. He is presently a member of the Board of directors of the Metro Hartford Chamber of Commerce and The 1892 Club. James was President of the Hartford County Bar Association.

The peer reviewed Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory has consistently given him its highest rating of AV for competence and compliance with ethical standards.

James Szerejko, past President of the HCBA has a copy of Day of Empire: How Hyperpowers Rise to Global Dominance - and Why They Fall signed by the book's author, Yale Law School Professor Amy L. Chua at the Hartford County Bar Association's 2012 Annual Meeting. He attended a keynote address and book signing by Professor Chua, who was named as Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2011. The speech and book-signing were a part of the association's annual meeting event.

Professor Chua is currently the John M. Duff Professor of Law at Yale University. She is well known for her book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which was excerpted in The Wall Street Journal in 2011. James Szerejko, a partner in Halloran & Sage's Litigation Department, recently obtained recertification as a Board Certified Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Board certification is a rigorous testing and approval process that recognizes the competence and courtroom experience of attorneys. To qualify, an attorney must have obtained a requisite number of jury verdicts, provide references from judges and opposing trial counsel, and pass a written examination. James has extensive experience in the representation and defense of governmental entities and public officials, particularly in the litigation of civil rights lawsuits. He remains certified until 2015, and was originally certified in 1995.

The National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of trial advocacy in the nation's courtrooms as well as assisting consumers in finding experienced and highly qualified trial lawyers.James Szerejko Elected to 1892 Club Board of Directors

James Szerejko, an attorney in Halloran & Sage's Litigation Department, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the 1892 Club, Inc.

The 1892 Club (formerly known as the 20th Century Club) came into being on April 13, 1892. Its stated purpose was for Club members to gather for dinner and discussion on topics of literary, cultural, social, economic and religious interest. The men and women of the 1892 Club today represent an array of interests, careers and communities and regularly come together to enjoy an evening of stimulating conversation, dinner, a guest speaker and good company.
