Biography

Jim is a partner in the Tax & Trusts Group. After graduating from Queen's University Law School, he studied at the University of Ottawa on a Department of Justice fellowship in legislative drafting and then joined Cassels Brock as an articling student.

After articling, Jim focused his efforts on tax and was the first member of the firm's tax practice on being called to the bar in 1974. Since then, he has been involved in the significant expansion of the firm's tax group and headed it for many years. Jim's areas of specialty include international taxation, taxation of charities and non-profit organizations, taxation of insurance companies, taxation of aircraft financing transactions and general corporate taxation, including reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions. Jim advises multinational corporations on tax matters, including both inbound and outbound investments. He also advises clients on the resolution of disputes with taxation authorities and works with the Advocacy Group in contesting tax disputes in court. In addition, Jim advises on estate planning and business succession issues.

Jim is a former instructor in the Taxation Section of the Bar Admission Course at the Law Society of Upper Canada. He is a former Chair of the Charity and Not-for-Profit Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association and a former Chair of the National Charities and Not-for-Profit Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association. Jim has prepared numerous submissions to the federal government on issues relating to charities on behalf of the OBA and the CBA and has appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance to present submissions on behalf of the CBA with respect to federal budgets.

Jim is a contributing editor of International Tax Planning and has written articles for The Philanthropist. His column on charities and taxation appears in the Canadian Donor's Guide. He has spoken and written extensively on matters relating to taxation, estate planning, charities and other non-profit organizations and charitable giving.

Jim has been consistently recognized by Lexpert and Best Lawyers in Canada as one of Canada's Leading Lawyers in Charities Law.
