James Hatton is a commercial solicitor with 20 years experience in assisting companies to exploit the value of their intellectual property assets, focusing on licensing and related transactions. James is the partner responsible for the Technology Group at Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP, the law firm identified by Lexpert magazine as the top corporate law firm and the top litigation firm in Vancouver, British Columbia. James has provided advice on intellectual property and related matters to, among others, TELUS, MacDonald Dettwiler, Overwaitea/Save-On Foods, The Vancouver Sun and the Greater Vancouver Regional District. James takes particular interest in collaboration agreements between biotech companies and pharmaceutical companies, and has acted for MIGENIX Biotech, Cardiome Pharma, INEX Pharmaceuticals, Forbes Medi-Tech, QLT and Response Biomedical, among others, against large pharmaceutical companies. James is a member of the Governing Council of the National Research Council of Canada, the government of Canada's premier research, development and innovation organization, which leverages Canada's public and private science and technology infrastructure for the benefit of Canadians. James is a member of the Board of Governors of Royal Roads University, a university based in Victoria, British Columbia offering undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs in applied and professional fields. James is a member of the International Bar Association Committee R (Technology), Licensing Executives Society, Computer Law Association, Association of University Technology Managers, Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, International Trademark Association, and related organizations. James is an occasional lecturer and author on intellectual property issues, most recently of Trends in life sciences licensing for 2007, presented to the Licensing Executives Society, Vancouver chapter, on March 29, 2007. James was the President of The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society for six years, and remains an honorary life director of that organization. James is a former member of the Judicial Advisory Committee for British Columbia, responsible for assessing candidates from British Columbia for appointment as superior court judges. James helped found and is the sole trustee of BIRC Corporation, incorporated by the Province of British Columbia and Industry Canada to facilitate the development of a biotechnology cluster in British Columbia. |
