| Biography | Jan M. Carroll, a partner in the Indianapolis, Indiana, office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, represents businesses and individuals in state and federal litigation. Her experience encompasses product liability (medical devices, pharmaceuticals, industrial equipment, agricultural products, and consumer goods); professional liability (doctors and lawyers); real estate and land use (eminent domain, premises liability, historic preservation and zoning); and commercial disputes. She also represents business owners, corporate executives and other high net worth individuals in marital dissolutions. Drawing on her 11 years as a reporter and editor with The Associated Press, Ms. Carroll assists news organizations and other publishers seeking access to public records and meetings, advises them on commercial distribution issues, and defends them against defamation and privacy claims, and subpoenas for journalistic work-product. Since 1986, she has written the Indiana section of the Media Law Resource Center's annual 50-State Survey: Media Libel Law. She also is responsible for the Indiana section of the Open Government Guide published by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Co-chair of the firm's Media Practice Group, Ms. Carroll is a frequent speaker on public access issues in continuing legal education seminars and to such groups as the National Conference of Inspectors General and the Judicial Conference of Indiana. In addition to her experience as an advocate, Ms. Carroll is familiar with alternative ways of resolving disputes outside of court, including negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Ms. Carroll has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America® in the categories of Bet-The-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, and First Amendment Law. She also has been listed in Indiana Super Lawyers® (business litigation) since 2004 and in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 editions of Chambers USA (commercial litigation). A member of the Indiana bar, Ms. Carroll is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Courts of Appeals for the Seventh, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits, and the District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, and the District of Colorado. She is a member of the Lawyers Committee of the National Center for State Courts, and the Indiana Supreme Court's Committee on the Character and Fitness of Attorneys. She has served on the firm's Management Committee and as co-chair of the firm's Recruiting Committee, Ms. Carroll is a cum laude graduate of the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis, where she was a note and development editor of the Indiana Law Review. A native of New Orleans, La., she earned her B.F.A. in journalism from Southern Methodist University, where she was editor-in-chief of The Daily Campus, the student newspaper.
