Janine Scancarelli is a senior counsel in Crowell & Moring's San Francisco office. Her practice focuses on class actions and other complex litigation involving unfair competition and antitrust law.
Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Janine was a partner in the San Francisco firm of Folger Levin & Kahn LLP. Before becoming a lawyer, Janine had a career in academia as a linguist, and earned tenure at the College of William & Mary.
Since 2002, Janine has served as the governor's representative to the Low Income Oversight Board, which was established by the legislature to advise the California Public Utilities Commission on programs to benefit low-income electricity, natural gas, and water customers. She also serves on The Salvation Army's San Francisco Metro Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of the Endangered Language Fund.
Representative Matters
· Won summary judgment for a manufacturer of utility vaults, in a federal antitrust action brought by a competitor.
· Won dismissal without leave to amend for a manufacturer of utility vaults in a federal antitrust and unfair business practices class action brought by a purported class of property developers.
· Defended class action lawsuits alleging deceptive and unfair business practices in state and federal courts.
· Represented a non-profit corporation intervening in a complex California Public Utilities Commission proceeding involving a proposed merger.
· Advised the management and Board of Governors of the California Independent System Operator on various matters, including issues arising under the California Government Code, Public Utilities Code, and Corporations Code, litigation assessment and preparation, intellectual property issues, employment issues, and compliance programs.
· Analyzed and monitored California energy policy and the positions of various interest groups in support of an initiative by an international company to develop electrical transmission in the western United States.
