Jason is an associate in our Litigation Group. His general commercial litigation practice has a particular emphasis on class actions, regulatory and administrative law, and appellate review.
Jason focuses on achieving creative and practical solutions for his clients and offers a broad range of dispute resolution skills including trial and appellate advocacy, negotiation, mediation and arbitration. He has acted as counsel before various administrative tribunals, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Ontario Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal.
Some of his notable experience includes:
· Defending over 30 class actions in a broad range of complex areas including product liability, competition law, negligence, breach of contract, franchise disputes, and misrepresentation
· Representing a national telecommunications company before the Federal Court of Appeal and successfully varying a CRTC decision on a matter of contractual interpretation
· Defending a retail energy marketer before the Ontario Energy Board in response to allegations of non-compliance with the Ontario Energy Act and associated regulations
· Representing a radio broadcast undertaking before the Federal Court of Appeal seeking to appeal the non-renewal of a broadcast licence
· Representing a client in the gaming industry before the Federal Court to appeal the assessment of a substantial administrative monetary penalty for purported violations under the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act
While in law school, Jason received numerous awards for his leadership, academic achievement and community involvement including the Charles J. Clark Scholarship in Law, the McCarthy Tétrault Leadership Award and the Law Society's award for Outstanding Achievement in Legal Studies. He worked as a research assistant to Dean Bruce P. Elman focusing in the areas of constitutional and criminal law, and worked concurrently as a teaching assistant in contract law. Jason was actively involved in student government, and was an avid and successful participant in a number of moot court competitions where he was recognized for his excellence in written and oral advocacy.
Prior to joining Cassels Brock, Jason served as a law clerk to Justice Robert L. Barnes of the Federal Court of Canada.
