Joel N. Jacobson has been a member of the firm for more than thirty-two years, and a member of the firm's Management Committee since 1987. His practice focuses on financial services, creditors' rights, real estate, and business law matters.
Joel has represented a large number of financial institutions in lending, work-out, foreclosure, bankruptcy and lender liability matters. He has also assisted bank clients with retail banking and regulatory issues.
Joel has represented real estate owners, developers and investors in a broad range of real estate transactions. His real estate clients have included the original developer of the Harborside Terminal in Jersey City, hotel developers and franchisees, private investment entities which own and manage office, industrial and warehouse buildings in New Jersey and throughout the U.S., the owners of a large number of K-Mart stores, and a fast-food franchisee engaged in a major expansion program. As part of his representation of financial institutions, Joel handled hundreds of sales of owned real estate, including many complex transactions involving joint ventures, projects under construction, hotels, health care facilities, golf courses, parking lots, offices and industrial buildings and vacant land.
In the area of business law, Joel has served as counsel to many closely-held companies in a broad range of industries, including manufacturing, retail, fuel oil distribution, restaurants, construction and technology. As part of such representation, he has handled many purchases and sales of businesses, ownership disputes and franchise matters.
Joel has been named the 2011 "Newark Area Best Lawyers Banking Lawyer of the Year" by Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. He is the only banking law attorney accorded this honor in the State of New Jersey. Joel is listed in the Banking Law section of the current issue of The Best Lawyers In America. In 2006 and 2007, he was named by Real Estate New Jersey magazine as one of the state's top real estate attorneys. Joel has been the primary contact for Meritas, a worldwide affiliation of more than 170 law firms, since the firm became a member in 1991.
