John Iole handles a broad range of first- and third-party insurance coverage claims, including directors and officers liability (D&O), aviation insurance (hull and liability), cyber insurance, including privacy, data security/network interruption, and first-party property. He also counsels clients on insurance and attorney ethics matters.
John represents Transocean, Ltd. against certain of its excess liability insurers in a dispute over insurance coverage for liabilities incurred in connection with the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico. He also represents Schnitzer Steel and Schnitzer Investment for reimbursement of environmental defense costs at the Portland Harbor Superfund Site and Federal-Mogul for Thailand flooding losses. Other representative clients include General Electric, General Motors, Macy's, and Safelite Solutions.
John has substantial experience in arbitrations conducted under the Bermuda Form of excess liability insurance and in other domestic and international arbitrations. He regularly appears in court on behalf of clients in both jury and non-jury matters.
John is an elected member of The American Law Institute and is an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, teaching Insurance Law. He was a member of the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania from 1997 to 2003, serving as its chairman. He also was a member of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Ad Hoc Committee on Evidence, which drafted Pennsylvania's first rules of evidence.
