Biography

John G. Smith is partner-in-charge of Strategy and Recruitment for the Patent Team of the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group

John counsels clients on intellectual property issues, focusing on patent matters in the electrical, computer, telecommunications, optics, semiconductor, electro-mechanical and mechanical arts. He oversees the patent programs of a broad spectrum of domestic and international clients, providing assistance in the areas of opinion drafting, negotiations, licensing, product redesign, due diligence, patent portfolio development and management and litigation. His litigation experience encompasses work on cases before the International Trade Commission, various U.S. district courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

John was formerly a patent examiner with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. After that he relocated to Japan, where he was resident as an intellectual property attorney in the Tokyo office of his previous U.S. law firm from 1995 to 1998. John continues to be a frequent visitor to Japan and conducts client meetings, negotiations and intellectual property lectures and seminars there on a regular basis. He is a primary co-author of the book Practical Guide to U.S. Patent Procedure for Japanese Practitioners (2005).

In General. John received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Marquette University in 1987 and his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1991. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
