Mr. Lombard has over 40 year's experience advising clients on sophisticated estate and trust matters, litigating large contested Estates and Trusts cases and representing high net worth individuals and families and family businesses. He concentrates his practice in museum and art law, representing major arts institutions and collectors including the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He is a member of the Museum Attorneys' Group, a group of lawyers in the country who represent major museums, which is also associated with the Smithsonian Institution. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Bioethics Center of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital for over 15 years. He also filed an amicus brief on behalf of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in the Joseph Fiori case, the first Pennsylvania case in its Supreme Court sustaining the right of a patient's family to request the termination of life supporting treatment. He has been and continues as a Consultant to the Medical Society and New Jersey and its BioEthics Committee on health care issues.
Mr. Lombard serves as a Member of the Advisory Committee of the Pennsylvania Joint State Government Commission, where he served until recently for many years as Chair of its subcommittee considering changes to the laws on powers of attorney, health care advance directives and guardianships.
Mr. Lombard has held the position of Chair of the American Bar Association's Real Property, Probate & Trust Law Section from 1990-91. He previously held the position Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Probate & Trust Section. He has served as a member of the Board of Regents and Executive Committee of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel where he also served President of its Foundation 2005-2007. Mr. Lombard is a member and Vice President of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law where he has served for many years as Chair of its Art Law Committee. For the last 25 years, he has provided expert opinions in Estate and Trust matters, supporting court testimony when necessary, both in Pennsylvania and other states in the country.
Prior to joining McCarter & English, Mr. Lombard practiced as a partner at an international law firm, where he served as the Vice-Chair of the Personal Law Section from 1990-1992 and moved on to become Chair of the Personal Law section from 1992-1999. Outside of the firm, Mr. Lombard has committed his time to serve on the board of directors to the Redevelopment Authority of Montgomery County, Pa. from 1980-1987. In addition, he has been a board member of the Gwynedd-Mercy College 1980-1989 and a member of the board for LaSalle College High School from 1991-1997. He has served since 1992 as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Joint State Government Commission as an arm of the Pennsylvania Legislature which advises and proposes to the Legislature changes related to Estates, Trusts, Guardianships and Powers of Attorney. He also was Chair of a SubCommittee advising the Legislature specifically on changes in the laws of guardianship and powers of attorney for both property management and health care decision making.
Mr. Lombard has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America since the inception of this publication 27 years ago. Mr. Lombard has received various awards throughout his years of practicing law. 1992 he received the William W. Treat Award from the National College of Probate Judges. Subsequently, in 2002 he received the Estate Planner Award for that year from the Philadelphia Estate Planning Council. He has been recognized as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer for many years. His resume appears in the 2012 Edition of Who's Who in the World.
