Jay Boyd is a partner in the Indianapolis, Indiana offices of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, and a member of the firm's Corporate Department. Mr. Boyd's practice involves representing private businesses and entrepreneurs in business organization, capitalization, acquisition, disposition, and operational activities with a special emphasis on tax issues. He has substantial experience with publicly held and privately owned energy-related, wagering and gaming and distribution businesses. He is also experienced in Indiana gaming licensing and has served as in-house general counsel to an investment management company. He is listed in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® in the Tax area. Mr. Boyd's tax practice spans nearly every discipline of federal and state tax from planning and participating in the legislative process through lobbying and drafting activities, developing tax-sensitive business strategies, and representing taxpayers before administrative agencies and courts. His wide range of experience in practice gives him a unique perspective on problem-solving and issues management for business interests with tax concerns. He has served as chairman of the Indiana State Bar Association Taxation Section, as chair of the Closely Held Business Committee of the American Bar Association's Taxation Section, and as a member of the section's Long Range Planning Committee. Mr. Boyd is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and was the first Hoosier in 25 years to sit on the IRS Commissioner's Advisory Group. Mr. Boyd earned his B.A. from Northwestern University and his J.D. cum laude from the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis. He also attended the Faculte de Droit at the University of Grenoble, France, in a program sponsored by Tulane University. He served as law clerk to the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. He also served as the first campaign treasurer for U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, as campaign treasurer for other state and federal campaigns, and as an advisor to the national chairman of the Democratic Committee. Mr. Boyd is admitted to practice in the Indiana Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Federal Circuit.
