Johny Chaklader joined Keller and Heckman in 2007. His areas of expertise are International Trade and Environmental Law.
Mr. Chaklader's International Trade practice focuses on export controls, economic sanctions, customs matters, anti-bribery, and foreign boycotts under the U.S. Commerce Department's Export Administration Regulations, the State Department's International Traffic in Arms Regulations, the Office of Foreign Assets Control's economic sanctions regulations, Customs and Border Protection's regulations, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and international sanctions regimes. As an advisor to his family's international shipping, trade and consultancy businesses, Mr. Chaklader also has experience in transport and tariff, corporate finance, transactional matters and global corporate sustainability.
Mr. Chaklader's Environmental practice focuses on product and facility regulatory compliance for the pesticide, chemical substance, hazardous material and fuel industries under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, among other federal and state programs.
Prior to joining Keller and Heckman, Mr. Chaklader interned at the St. Alban's office of Congressman Gregory Meeks and the Capitol Hill office of Senator Pete V. Domenici. Mr. Chaklader also helped raise $200,000 to develop The Shapna Project (www.TheShapnaProject.com), a tea and coffee social entrepreneurship venture designed to empower small-scale independent farmers throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the United States. For over two years, he served as President and CEO of Shapna, which is now the focus of his Master's degree candidacy in Sustainability and Environmental Management at Harvard University.
As an undergraduate, Mr. Chaklader investigated sonar and echolocation, and the interstellar production of chemicals necessary for the rise of life on Earth. While working on his Masters of Sciences degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences, he published his thesis on asteroid impacts, magma oceans and water-content on the Moon and Mars in the American Mineralogist. Mr. Chaklader obtained his Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration in Corporate Finance from Howard University, where he served as staff editor of the Howard Law Journal.
