Biography

Jonathan F. Jorissen is an associate practicing in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office. He is a 2002 graduate of the University of Notre Dame (B.A., cum laude) and a 2007 graduate of the Ave Maria School of Law (J.D., magna cum laude), where he served as Executive Notes Editor for the Law Review (2006-2007), worked as a Research Assistant, and received the St. Thomas More Full-Tuition Academic Scholarship.

Mr. Jorissen concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial litigation, including automotive supply chain disputes arising under the UCC; intellectual-property litigation; trade secrets; and media law, particularly First Amendment issues surrounding News Racks and public fora.

Prior to joining Butzel Long, Mr. Jorissen served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Judge Lawrence P. Zatkoff at the United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan and as an Extern for the Honorable Judge Stanley Latreille at the 44th Circuit Court in Howell, Michigan. Before commencing his legal career, Mr. Jorissen worked in the Student Activities Office of the University of Notre Dame as Program Coordinator for the Legends of Notre Dame and served as an alumni volunteer at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School where he taught English, Social Justice, and Philosophy.

Mr. Jorissen published a Note, "Katrina's House: The Constitutionality of the Forced Removal of Citizens from Their Homes in the Wake of Natural Disasters," 5 Ave Maria L. Rev. 587 (2007).

Mr. Jorissen is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the American Bar Association. He is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the United State Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Experience

· Worked on trial team representing plaintiff in action for multiple breaches of a supply contract. After a 4 week jury trial, obtained a $25.7M judgment

· Represented automotive supplier and defeated various summary-judgment motions in defending against breach-of-contract and breach-of-warranty action

· Obtained summary disposition in breach-of-contract action arising out of employment agreements

· Obtained spoliation-of-evidence instruction in misappropriation-of-trade-secrets action

· Represented plaintiff in misappropriation-of-trade-secrets action and defeated numerous summary-disposition motions

· Represented defendant in patent-inventorship dispute

· Represented defendants in defamation and tortious-interference action

· Advised higher-education institution on First Amendment public fora issues

· Represented automotive-supplier plaintiff in breach-of-contract and breach-of-warranty action

· Represented defendant in freight-charge-dispute action

· Represented plaintiff in patent-infringement action

· Prevailed on Motion for Summary Disposition on behalf of our client, an anchor tenant in a shopping center, and against the landlord who claimed wrongful termination of the lease

· Submitted multiple amicus briefs in various courts on media issues for multiple clients, including media associations, newspapers and broadcasters

· Represented a national cable entertainment news show in connection with a defamation action
