| Biography | Joe is a member in the firm's Boston office and practices in the Litigation Section, where he specializes in complex commercial and business litigation, products liability and insurance coverage. He leads the firm's products liability practice and is co-chair of the firm's Insurance/Reinsurance Practice Group, which represents insurers in complex insurance coverage disputes involving asbestos, toxic torts, tobacco, and environmental liabilities, among others, as well as issues involving insurance brokers and agents. Joe is a member of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, an organization of attorneys, judges, law faculty, and legal scholars elected by their peers to become members for their achievements and commitment to their communities and the legal profession. He has been recognized for several years, most recently in 2011, by a national publication as a Massachusetts Super Lawyer, placing him in the top 5% of Massachusetts attorneys based on a survey of his peers. He was also selected by his peers to be included in The Best Lawyers in America 2012 for his expertise in Product Liability Litigation. Joe has extensive experience in complex civil litigation. He has tried cases on behalf of Johnson & Johnson, Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Eagle-Picher Industries, Inc., Fisher-Price Toys, Cummins Engines, Hollingsworth and Vose Co., and Exxon Corporation, among others. He has represented Georgia-Pacific Corp., General Electric Co., and Johnson & Johnson, among others, in class action litigation. His trial experience in insurance coverage litigation includes winning each of the three cases that he has tried to verdict in multi-million-dollar comprehensive coverage actions. In addition to his trial experience, Joe has extensive experience representing clients in ADR proceedings, including numerous mediations and arbitrations. Joe has also argued numerous appeals in both state and federal courts. He is a member of the bars of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Appeals Court, the United States District Court (Massachusetts), and the United States Courts of Appeals for the First, Second, and Third Circuits. Joe has appeared on behalf of clients pro hac vice in many states. Joe is a past co-chair of the Law and Policy Committee of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Industry Council. He is also a member of the American Bar Association's Insurance Coverage Litigation and Products Liability committees and the ABA subcommittee on Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Litigation. He planned and chaired the first five annual ACI Drug and Medical Device Litigation Conferences in New York City. He also serves on the Drug and Medical Device, Products Liability and Insurance committees of the Defense Research Institute (DRI) and is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). He also serves on the Board of Directors of the New England Legal Foundation, and on the Board of Directors of the George Washington University Law Alumni Association. Joe is a frequent author and lecturer on products liability, insurance coverage and trial practice, and has testified before the Massachusetts Legislature on several important pieces of litigation impacting product manufacturers and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He has been appointed to the faculty of the 2010 IADC Trial Academy, one of the nation's premier trial training programs. Joe received his J.D., with high honors, from the National Law Center, George Washington University, where he was an Editor of the Law Review and a member of Order of the Coif. He received his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Boston College (1979), where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
