Joe practices in the firm's Business section and handles a variety of general corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, real estate and corporate financing, and asset based lending. Listed in The Best Lawyers in America in both the Financial Institutions Law and the Corporate Law categories, he belongs to the American Bar Association (Committee on Legal Opinions of the Section of Business Law), the Alabama State Bar and the Birmingham Bar Association. He has served as Chairman of the Membership, Fee Arbitration and Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee for the Birmingham Bar Association. Joe is a member of the Alabama Bar Institute Continuing Legal Education program and served on the Alabama Law Institute drafting committees for Articles 2A, 4A, 3, 4 and 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code. He also served on the multiple party accounts drafting committee. Joe co-authored, with partner Jay Price, a forms and practice manual, Alabama Secured Transactions Under Revised Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham and past president of the Birmingham Tip-Off Club. He is also on the President's Cabinet of the University of Alabama.
Joe received his B.S. in Accounting in 1963 and his LL.B. in 1966, both from the University of Alabama. He was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, the Farrah Order of Jurisprudence (the predecessor of the Order of the Coif), Omicron Delta Kappa and Jasons Society. He was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1966 and served two years in the United States Army including a tour in Vietnam.
