Biography

Joseph Welter focuses his practice on the representation of companies and carriers in toxic tort, product liability, pharmaceutical, and medical device litigation. Joe is co-chair of the firm's Toxic Torts Practice Group, in which he has a specific focus on asbestos litigation. Over the past 20-plus years, Joe has served as national, regional, and local trial counsel for a diverse array of prominent companies involved in asbestos litigation across the country, including New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut. He is a nationally-recognized lecturer and author regarding cutting-edge, asbestos-related issues. Joe also is the editor of Goldberg Segalla's Asbestos Case Tracker, which tracks and reports on significant asbestos decisions across the country.

Joe has also acted as science and trial counsel in connection with mass tort claims in the aviation, pharmaceutical, and medical device areas, which has included federal court multi-district litigations and state court mass tort programs. Joe has worked with clients to develop effective litigation plans, trial strategies, and settlement matrixes for mass tort claims in this unique litigation setting. In particular, Joe has worked with clients to develop effective defenses based on the scientific and medical issues involved, vetting and retention of scientific and medical expert witnesses, and effective use of Daubert and Frye motions to preclude plaintiffs' experts. He is also the co-editor of Life Science Matters, Goldberg Segalla's blog covering the latest legal developments involving medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

Joe possesses an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest available rating, and has been selected for inclusion in Business First's Who's Who in Law, New York Super Lawyers, and Super Lawyers, Corporate Counsel Edition.
