Joseph L. Meadows is a counsel in the Washington, DC office's Litigation Group, where he specializes in complex civil litigation and arbitration. As a litigator since 1998, Joe has tried a dozen cases before judges and juries, arbitrated commercial disputes, and argued motions in various federal and state courts.
Joe has represented clients in a variety of matters, involving bankruptcy, construction, government contracts, pharmaceuticals, structured finance, and taxation matters. Recent examples are as follows:
· post-bankrupt debtor in litigation against Fortune 100 financial institution regarding billions in structured finance transactions;
· Fortune 100 chemical company in litigation against the IRS involving millions in research and development tax credits;
· leading generic drug manufacturer in litigation against states regarding Medicaid reimbursement;
· government wartime contractor in False Claims Act litigation;
· owners of combined-cycle natural gas power plants in arbitration against the general contractor concerning millions in delay and liquidated damages under engineering, procurement, and construction contracts;
· regional ambulance service company in litigation against Fortune 100 financial institution regarding a loan contract dispute;
· various national insurance companies in multiple bankruptcy disputes involving asbestos claims; and
· several clients in pro bono criminal, immigration and family dispute matters.
Before joining Crowell & Moring LLP in 2004, Joe was an associate with Dickstein Shapiro LLP in Washington, D.C. As part of that firm's Litigation Group, his practice spanned a variety of areas including bankruptcy, Fair Credit Reporting Act litigation, legal malpractice, condemnation matters, civil forfeitures, and post-judgment collection.
Joe started his legal career as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division. He was hired through the Honors Program and litigated tax matters in federal and state courts, taking a number of cases to trial. For his work with the government, Joe received the Tax Division's Outstanding Attorney Award in 2000.
