Joseph N. Schmidt, Jr. is a partner in the Princeton office. Joe concentrates his practice in environmental law, including all aspects of regulatory compliance issues and the environmental implications which result from business and real estate transactions. Joe has more than 16 years of experience in evaluating and minimizing risks relating to New Jersey and federal environmental regulatory compliance and transactional issues. He has guided many companies and individuals to cost-effective solutions as they maneuver through the maze of complex federal, state and local environmental statutes and regulations. For Joe, his top priority as an environmental lawyer is serving as a problem solver for his clients.
Joe formerly practiced as senior staff attorney with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in Trenton, New Jersey. He worked on the initial implementation of the Environmental Cleanup Responsibility Act (the predecessor statute to the Industrial Site Recovery Act) and other significant New Jersey environmental statutes. In private practice since 1986, Joe has extensive experience in all aspects of environmental regulatory, due diligence and permitting issues, including the Industrial Site Recovery Act, Brownfields redevelopment, underground storage tanks, water, solid and hazardous wastes and other environmental programs. He advises clients concerning environmental issues which arise as part of various land use matters including providing advice on wetlands, stormwater management and other related issues. In General. Joe has published several environmental articles, including an often-cited law review article on ECRA. Joe is a frequent lecturer on a wide variety of environmental issues which affect important business concerns in New Jersey, the northeast region and the nation. He serves on the board of trustees and as the chairman of the Regulatory Impact Committee of the Union/Middlesex Hazardous Materials Advisory Council. He is a member of the Leadership Committee and the Large Business Council of the Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Environmental Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association.
