Biography

Joseph W. Hovermill chairs the firm's Products Liability Practice Group. Joe's practice focuses on the defense of product manufacturers in toxic tort and environmental litigation in the region and nationally. He supervises the management of mass torts, class actions, and other multi-party litigation nationally for a publicly-traded manufacturing client, developing and implementing coordinated litigation strategies to resolve those matters favorably. Joe also acts as liaison counsel in mass torts brought in the mid-Atlantic region, coordinating the defense of such suits with plaintiff's counsel, courts and multiple defendants. Joe's experience includes mass torts alleging occupational exposure or environmental contamination arising out of a variety of allegedly toxic substances, including asbestos, silica, mold, vinyl chloride, benzene, nickel, lead, perchlorate, and TCE/PCE.

Joe also heads up the firm's team of experienced policyholder insurance coverage lawyers. He regularly represents policyholders (including a number of large publicly-traded and privately-held companies) in insurance coverage and/or insurance-related issues. Joe assists business clients in the retention and analysis of insurance, including coverages offered under CGL, workers compensation, Property, D&O, E&O and specialty policies. He also handles or, if necessary, litigates coverage disputes arising out of a variety of insurance policies.

Outside the products liability and insurance areas, Joe's practice encompasses a range of complex civil matters including nationwide/statewide class action litigation and business disputes. He is regional counsel to a large financial services company for all lawsuits brought in the region arising out of that company's credit card operations.

Joe received an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, was named one of the Best Lawyers in America ® and was listed as a Maryland Super Lawyer. In 2011, he was also named among the "Top 50" Maryland Super Lawyers.
