Judy Boyes is an experienced litigator, practicing primarily in family law for close to 30 years. She was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2000. Before joining Davis LLP, Ms. Boyes was senior counsel in a family law boutique firm in Alberta. She has appeared as counsel in all levels of court in Alberta, including the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen's Bench and the Court of Appeal. As well, she offers alternative dispute resolution options for the resolution of family disputes through her training as a mediator, arbitrator and collaborative lawyer.
With her practice focus on family law, Ms. Boyes advises clients on matrimonial property issues including complex corporate matters, professional practices, business and pension valuations and family trusts as well as on significant financial issues including spousal and child support. In addition to advising clients on family law matters, Ms. Boyes has represented clients in estate litigation and in legal professional liability matters.
Ms. Boyes has been chosen as a leading family law lawyer by her peers for inclusion in the Lexpert Directory, a recognized Canadian legal directory, as well as by National Post's The Best Lawyers in Canada. Ms. Boyes' distinguished career was also noted in Peter C. Newman's book, Titans: How the New Canadian Establishment Seized Power. In 2002 she was awarded the Osgoode Hall Law School Alumni Gold Key Award for her contribution to the profession as an alumnus of the law school.
Ms. Boyes has been the Chair or a speaker on numerous panels for the Legal Education Society of Alberta in areas of civil litigation generally, family law and trial advocacy. She has been on the organizing committee for the National Family Law Program, as well as a moderator and presenter at the programs over the last 20 years on matters relating to the practice of family law, alternative dispute resolution options and professional ethics. She was an instructor in Trial Advocacy at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law for more than 10 years.
