Kara Cormier is an associate in the Litigation Department of Edwards Wildman. She has been involved in a wide range of civil litigation, involving commercial contract disputes, employment-related matters, copyright, trademark and patent infringement, counterfeiting, unfair competition, tortious interference, and probate matters in both the federal and state courts of New York. Kara has worked with clients in a variety of industries including health and beauty product manufacturers, food packaging distributors, accounting firms, surgical device manufacturers, hospitals, higher education institutions, horse racing associations, and home health care service providers. Kara has also represented the City of New York as pro bono trial counsel and she served as an Assistant District Attorney in a pro bono capacity for Nassau County.
•Kara represented the City of New York as pro-bono trial counsel in slip-and-fall case by preparing the case and fact and expert witnesses for trial, delivering opening statements, and examining witnesses.
•She second-chaired a trial for a racing association accused of negligence by preparing witnesses and interfacing with experts, examining a witness at trial, and drafting briefs requested by the trial judge.
•She was the primary associate, researching and drafting briefs, motions, and discovery documents in a trade secret misappropriation case involving a money remittance system provider. In particular, Kara successfully drafted a motion to dismiss, which dispensed with two out of four claims against her client.
•She represented Nassau County as an assistant district attorney serving in a pro-bono capacity in a defendant's appeal of his robbery conviction by drafting the People's response brief and arguing the appeal in Second Department. She also successfully opposed the defendant's application for leave to appeal to the New York Court of Appeals.
•She represented a health and beauty product retailer in litigation brought by a supplier alleging non-payment for goods sold.
•She represented a commercial equipment manufacturer in an action for breach of contract and account stated by handling all aspects of the case.
•She drafted a successful summary judgment motion for a NY hospital accused of employment discrimination.
•She drafted a successful motion to dismiss a complaint brought against a medical device manufacturer by a competitor alleging false advertising and deceptive trade practices.
•She drafted a successful motion to dismiss for a NY home health care services provider accused of unfair competition and tortious interference.
Before Edwards Wildman
Before joining the firm, Kara attended Georgetown University Law Center where she worked on the Georgetown Law Journal and its affiliated American Review of Criminal Procedure, an annual publication highlighting American criminal law. She also worked for a boutique DC law firm as a litigation associate handling IP and trade secret misappropriation matters. Kara worked at the Boston Police Department in the Office of the Legal Advisor. She also worked for an International firm based in New York and an International firm based in Boston.
