Karel Janssens is an associate in the Brussels office of Crowell & Moring and has been a member of the Brussels Bar since 2006. He specializes in TMT (technology, media and telecommunications), IP (intellectual property), competition law and general commercial law. Karel graduated in Law from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) in 2004. He studied one year at the Université de Montesquieu IV in Bordeaux (France), and completed a Master's Degree (magna cum laude) in International and European Law at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) in 2005. After working with a Brussels niche firm specialized in IP and TMT, Karel joined Crowell & Moring in 2007. Karel regularly advises clients from the media and telecommunications sectors (broadcasters, cable operators, network operators and advertisers) on regulatory and licensing issues. He has also assisted clients on e-commerce and internet related issues such as online gaming, ISP liability, online services, distance selling and e-advertising. In addition, Karel specializes in the law relating to unfair trade practices. He has recently litigated various cases relating to comparative and misleading advertising, nutrition claims, database theft, product tying, sweepstakes and lotteries. Karel also advises clients from the pharmaceutical sector on issues relating to marketing practices and advertising. Finally, Karel was involved in several high-profile competition cases in the Belgian markets of broadcasting, telephony, internet and digital TV operators. Karel is fluent in Dutch, English and French.
