Katherine P. Califa is an associate with Foley & Lardner LLP where her practice focuses on counseling clients on the selection, clearance, prosecution, registration, and enforcement of trademarks in the United States and abroad, as well as advising clients regarding Internet and domain name, copyright, trade dress, and right of publicity/right of privacy matters. She also has experience drafting and negotiating consent, coexistence and other settlement agreements in intellectual property related disputes, representing clients before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and providing intellectual property counseling on business transactions, including due diligence. Ms. Califa has presented on a broad range of topics, including use of keyword advertising, the right of publicity, and the registrability of sound marks. She is a member of the firm's Trademark, Copyright & Advertising Practice and the Medical Devices Industry Team.
Prior to joining Foley, Ms. Califa served as a law clerk for the Honorable Deborah K. Chasanow at the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
Ms. Califa earned her J.D. from Stanford Law School and her B.A., cum laude, from Wellesley College.
Ms. Califa is co-author of a chapter on e-commerce published in the Commerce Clearing House (CCH Incorporated) treatise Product Distribution Law Guide (2010). She is also co-author of the chapter on Virginia law in the treatise State Trademark and Unfair Competition Law, published by Clark Boardman (2008).
Ms. Califa is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States District of Maryland. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the International Trademark Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
