Professional Experience
Kathleen Monnes is a partner at Day Pitney and chair of the firm's Insurance and Reinsurance Disputes practice group. She represents insurance companies and brokers in a wide variety of matters involving claims under life, health, and property and casualty policies. She has extensive experience representing clients in connection with disputes over coverage, unfair trade practices, and bad faith. She has appeared on behalf of clients in both state and federal courts in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Vermont, and West Virginia. Kathleen has also represented and advised insurance companies in matters pending before state regulators, including issues relating to the change of control of domestic companies, licensing, and defense of market conduct reviews and consumer complaints.
Representative Matters
· Defense of an insured's claim for insurance coverage for millions of dollars in asbestos losses; the matter was resolved through summary judgment in favor of the insurers; the Connecticut Supreme Court recently affirmed that judgment, resulting in a finding of no liability on the part of the insurers
· Defense of several large insurance coverage actions in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York involving claims for environmental contamination
· Defense of a national insurance company involving claims under boiler and machinery policies in actions pending throughout the country, including Connecticut, Mississippi, Alabama, and Vermont
· Defense of a managed care company in high-profile actions involving breach of contract and fraud claims by providers and ERISA plan participants
· Requests for Connecticut and Massachusetts regulatory approval of several large transactions involving the change of control of domestic companies

Outside Interests
· Kathleen has served on the board of directors of MetroBridge, a nonprofit mentoring organization run in conjunction with The Hartford Courant, that is dedicated to teaching journalism, photography, and sales and marketing skills to Hartford area high school students.
· Through her affiliation in Day Pitney's WWT Program, Kathleen has organized and participated in outreach, mentoring and charitable initiatives with a variety of Hartford based organizations.
