    Biography

    Katy practices in the firm's Labor & Employment Law section. She has delivered presentations on hiring issues, disability management, FMLA, and workers' compensation. Katy regularly advises employers on leave issues, employee counseling, and policies and procedures. Along with John Coleman, Katy co-authored the chapter addressing employer recordkeeping obligations in the 2004 supplement to BNA's Occupational Safety and Health Law. She is a member of the Alabama State Bar and the U.S. District Court's Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Alabama. In addition, she was recognized as a "Rising Star" by Alabama Super Lawyers in 2011 and 2012 in the area of Employment & Labor.

    Katy serves Board Member of the Birmingham Bar Association's Women Lawyers Section and has served as co-chairman of the Programs Committee. She is also the Co-Vice President for Legal and Legislative Affairs for BSHRM. She is a member of the Young Lawyers Division of the Birmingham Bar Association and also Alabama Women in Business. She has served as a Better Basics volunteer.

    Katy received her B.S., summa cum laude, in 1999 from the University of Alabama and her J.D., cum laude, in 2002 from the University of Georgia. During law school, Katy served as the Executive Notes Editor of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law. Katy's note "A Matter of Compliance: How do U.S. Multinational Corporations Deal with the Discrepancies in the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 and the European Union Directive on Parental Leave; Is an International Standard Practical or Appropriate in this Area of Law?" was published in the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law (30 Ga. J. Int'l and Comp. L. 543 (2002)).

    I am currently raising money for the American Heart Association by participating in the "Jail Bail" program. My husband and I attend Trinity United Methodist Church.
