Diversity at
Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter
Further, Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter has implemented and/or participated in the following
efforts with respect to the participation of women and minorities in our firm:
Diversity
At Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter, we appreciate the importance of diversity and inclusion.
Through the firm’s Minority Merit Scholarship, and activities such as the Columbus Bar
Association’s Diversity Initiative, the Minority Clerkship Program and our Women Lawyers’
Initiative, Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter is continually promoting and developing a diverse future
for our firm.
Minority Merit Scholarship
The Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter Minority Merit Scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year minority law student of African-American, Asian-American, American Indian or Hispanic descent. The scholarship recipient is chosen based upon academic performance, scholastic
accomplishments, activities and potential contributions to the legal community. First-year minority law students from select Ohio and Midwest universities are invited to apply for the
scholarship.
The Minority Merit scholar joins law students in our Summer Associate Program, following
completion of the first year of law school. In addition to this paid clerkship, the scholarship
includes a $4,000.00 (net) cash award to be used for the recipient’s second year of law school
tuition.
The Minority Merit Scholarship represents efforts by our combined diversity and recruiting
committees to increase diversity within the firm. By actively encouraging the application and
ultimate selection of uniquely qualified minority candidates for our firm’s Summer Associate
Program, we are proactively moving Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter toward its ultimate goal of
attracting, hiring and retaining the most qualified and talented people.
Managing Directors’ Diversity Initiative
As a charter member of the Columbus Bar Association’s Diversity Initiative, Kegler, Brown, Hill
& Ritter is working with other local law firms, local law schools, and the Ohio State Bar
Association to significantly increase the number of minority attorneys recruited, hired and
promoted by our firm. Through the initiative, our firm is helping to change the racial
demographics of Columbus law firms.
Columbus Bar Association Minority Clerkship Program
Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter is a founding member and proud participant in the Columbus Bar
Association’s Minority Clerkship Program. This outstanding program provides first year minor law students with an opportunity to clerk at the firm and various other private and
public sector employers.
At the firm, each Minority Clerkship Program participant is given the same clerkship
experience as other firm Summer Associates. Just as the minority students benefit from the
legal experience, Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter also benefits from the diverse participants
assigned to the firm.
Women Lawyers’ Initiative
In 2000, Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter’s diversity committee developed the Women Lawyers’
Initiative (“WLI”) to meet the professional and personal development needs of the firm’s
female attorneys. The group provides the women lawyers of the firm an opportunity to meet
monthly to share ideas, best practices, concerns and solutions. Speakers are brought in to
address issues of importance to female professionals. The WLI contributes to the community
by adopting a yearly group community service project. These projects have included book
drives, donation drives and other events, such as the Komen Race for the Cure. The WLI also
contributes to the sense of community among all women employed by the firm by presenting
firmwide events, such as brown bag lunches on women’s health. WLI fosters a greater sense
of commitment and community among our women lawyers, strengthening each female
attorney’s ties with the firm.
