Kenneth W. (Ken) Vermeulen is of counsel in the Grand Rapids, Mich. office in Barnes & Thornburg. He practices in the firm's Real Estate and Environmental Departments and has extensive experience regarding both environmental and real estate matters. Mr. Vermeulen's expertise includes commercial leasing, zoning, state and federal cleanups, brownfield development and acquisition, and divestiture due diligence. In the past, Mr. Vermeulen has represented sand and gravel producers, petroleum wholesalers and retailers, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), large grocery retailers, and has worked with various lending institutions regarding environmental matters.
Mr. Vermeulen currently serves as General Counsel for the Michigan Aggregates Association. He recently chaired the Grand Rapids Bar Association in their Environmental Law Section. He also recently served as the chairperson of the Michigan Refined Petroleum Cleanup Advisory Council where he studied and recommended changes to Michigan's Refined Petroleum Cleanup Program.
Mr. Vermeulen has been published in an array of publications concerning matters in environmental law and real estate matters. He was a contributing author for Michigan Chamber of Commerce's "Understanding Environmental Law - A Guide for Michigan Business"; Michigan Environmental Statutes and Regulations; Michigan Real Property Law, Principles and Commentary, 2nd Edition; and Michigan Chamber of Commerce's "The 100 Biggest Mistakes of Environmental Compliance". He also published articles on various environmental law topics, including Michigan's Environmental Response Act and U.S. EPA's Lender Liability Rule, USTs, Part 201, Lender Liability, and others.
Mr. Vermeulen received his bachelor's degree in business from Calvin College in 1986 and his law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1989.
Outside of his career, Mr. Vermeulen is a frequent lecturer on a wide variety of environmental and real estate development topics.
Mr. Vermeulen is a member of the American Bar Association in their Environment, Energy and Resources Section. He is also a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Grand Rapids Bar Association in their Environmental Law Section. Mr. Vermeulen is admitted to practice in the state of Michigan.
