Biography

Kevin King, a member of Sutherland's Intellectual Property Practice Group and chair of the Group's Medical Devices Practice Team, focuses his practice on domestic and international patent prosecution and intellectual property counseling related to chemical, mechanical and biomedical technologies, with particular experience in the area of medical devices, such as drug delivery systems, implantable biological tissues, surgical adhesives, pharmaceutical formulations, surgical tools and biosensors. His clients include early-stage companies, publicly traded companies, universities, cardiologists and urologists. Kevin's practice also involves negotiating IP license agreements, patent portfolio management, and rendering patentability, validity, and product clearance opinions.

Prior to his legal career, Kevin was a process engineer, working with pulp and paper, polymer and inorganic chemical processing industries.

Kevin is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Representative Experience

Kevin's extensive representative experience includes:

· Helping a company build a portfolio of more than 150 domestic and foreign patents and applications to protect its pioneering technology for a new generation of implantable drug delivery and biosensing technology.

· Representing an internationally recognized research university in patenting a microneedle technology for transdermal drug delivery and diagnostic fluid sampling.

· Assisting a company in developing a patent strategy for protecting a novel antimicrobial composition for use in water treatment applications.

· Providing a patent clearance opinion for a new heart surgery instrument.

· Representing another renowned research university in building a patent portfolio covering a biodegradable implant device for controlled drug delivery in urological therapies.

· Helping a company successfully assert its patent on a mineral filler used in the papermaking process against an infringing competitor.

· On behalf of a client, successfully challenging two patents of a competitor through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office re-examination proceeding.
