Kirsten E. Small focuses her practice in appellate law in state and federal courts.
Ms. Small represents clients in white-collar criminal proceedings, particularly at sentencing and on appeal, and is also a member of the firm's business litigation group, where she focuses on appeals and critical motions practice.
Ms. Small has been appointed to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeal's Criminal Justice Appellate Panel Committee for the Fourth Circuit. As a part of the committee, she will help develop standards of eligibility for attorneys to gain membership on the court's panel of attorneys. The lawyers that meet the requirements are qualified to represent indigent criminal defendants on appeal and in capital cases. The committee also plays a role in approving panel members and will develop training opportunities for the attorneys on the panel.
Ms. Small served with the Honorable Judge William W. Wilkins in 1994-1995 before assuming the senior clerk position, which she held from 1996 - 2007. She also clerked with Fourth Circuit Judge Karen Williams for a year. Her experience touches on a number of areas, including commercial litigation, labor and employment, and alternative dispute resolution.
Ms. Small earned her undergraduate degree from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and her law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
