Mr. Kurzweil is a partner Environmental Practice Group. He represents oil, chemical, financial services and manufacturing companies, as well as real estate developers, in environmental matters, while continuing to counsel a range of domestic and foreign companies on general commercial and product liability matters. An experienced trial attorney in federal and state courts, Mr. Kurzweil handles cost recovery actions in environmental cases involving landfills, groundwater, soil contamination and underground storage tanks, and advises clients on natural resource damages issues. Mr. Kurzweil regularly works with clients to navigate through complex regulatory matters and assists them with environmental issues arising in transactions. He also continues to represent clients in commercial matters, as well as products liability, toxic torts, and a range of contract and reinsurance issues.
Mr. Kurzweil has successfully mediated and arbitrated several cost recovery actions in New Jersey and New York, resulting in very substantial awards in favor of the firm's clients. He also negotiated the transfer of responsibility for many sites.
For 20 years, Mr. Kurzweil was closely involved in the administration of New Jersey ethics matters. For 14 years, he was a member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Disciplinary Oversight Committee, serving as its Chairman for seven years, concluding his term in February 2008. Mr. Kurzweil is also the past Chairman of the Supreme Court of New Jersey District V-A Ethics Committee, and past Chairman of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Ethics Finance Committee.
Mr. Kurzweil lectures regularly on environmental law, professional responsibility and trial advocacy. He is a frequent speaker on New Jersey's Natural Resource Damages Program for the Rutgers University Office of Continuing Professional Education and for the Environmental and Insurance Law Sections of the New Jersey State Bar Association, NJ ICLE, Law Seminars International and ABA SEER. Additionally, he co-moderates the bimonthly round table of the Environmental Business Council of the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey.
Mr. Kurzweil currently serves as a mediator in the Essex County Chancery Division Early Settlement Program, and previously served as an arbitrator for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
Mr. Kurzweil has been recognized as a Chambers USA "Leaders in their Field" lawyer for 2007-2012 and as a New Jersey Super Lawyer in 2005-2012.
Mr. Kurzweil is a member of the Montclair Planning Board and a member of the board of La Casa de Don Pedro, a Newark-based community service organization that provides job training, child day care, and other services to families in need of assistance. He is also a member of the advisory board for Dartmouth College Hillel.
