Lawrence Kouns is a trial partner in the Business / Complex Litigation Practice Group. Since joining the firm in 1981, Mr. Kouns has specialized in complex business litigation, sports law, product liability and trial practice. He has substantial experience trying cases in both state and federal courts, including cases involving business torts, partnership and corporate disputes and dissolutions, lender liability, breach of fiduciary duty, contract disputes, product liability, personal injury and insurance bad faith. Mr. Kouns has represented many clients in the corporate, manufacturing and professional sports areas. He is past Chair of the Business/Complex Litigation and Product Liability & Warranty Practice Groups. He serves as General Counsel to the firm. From 1980 to 1981, Mr. Kouns served as a law clerk to the Honorable Edward J. Schwartz, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Recent Work / Representative Matters Represented Corporation against taxing entity in suit for recovery of improperly assessed taxes. Client obtained summary judgment and was awarded all of its attorneys' fees. Defended product manufacturer against claims by numerous cities and counties alleging the defendants' marketing and distribution practices violated California's unfair competition law. Obtained summary judgment which was affirmed on appeal. Obtained multi-million dollar judgment for Hospital District in suit against Joint Powers Insurance Authority.
