About this office:

History: Lee and Li began as the law office of Mr. James Lee. Mr. Lee began his law practice in Shanghai and formed his own firm in Taipei in 1953. He was joined by Dr. C.N. Li in 1965. In 1970, in memory of Mr. James Lee who passed away that year, Dr. Li named the office "Lee and Li", thus marking the formal establishment of the firm.

Growth and Areas of Emphasis: Keeping pace with the rapid economic development of the Republic of China (R.O.C.), the firm has expanded steadily since its establishment. It is now the largest law firm in the R.O.C. and its scope of practice encompasses all areas of commercial law, with an emphasis on serving clientele of transnational nature. In addition to the legal services, Lee and Li is often called upon by the R.O.C. government to provide advice on various legislative and policy matters.

Structure: Lee and Li's main office in Taipei has more than 600 employees, with a legal and professional staff of 380. Lee and Li also maintains offices in Hsinchu, Kaohsiung, Taichung, R.O.C. and alliance firms in P.R.C. Lee and Li has established correspondent relationships with foreign law firms throughout America, Europe, Asia and Africa to facilitate matters involving the legal systems of the other countries. Lee and Li also has well-established working relationships with major business consulting firms, accounting firms and banking institutions. These connections have proven to be valuable resource to clients, particularly for those who are less familiar with the R.O.C. business community.

Client Base: Among approximately 50,000 clients, most of them are multinational businesses. The leaders of modern industries including electronics, computer, petro-chemical, pharmaceutical, publication, trading, securities, insurance and banking industries, etc., of North America, Europe, Asia and other areas are mostly on Lee & Li's client list.

Case Management Philosophy: Lee and Li employs a unique team-work approach that provides the most comprehensive, efficient and cost-saving legal services to its clients. Moreover, a Data and Information Center is established to ensure quick access to up-to-date information on laws and related matters, so that services may be rendered in the most efficient manner.

Statement of Practice Summary:
Scope of Practice: Lee and Li provides a full range of legal services. Our services are performed by people with different talents. Over 150 lawyers admitted in Taiwan work with CPAs, patent attorneys, trademark attorneys, and more than 100 technology experts. About 40 Lee and Li attorneys are admitted in foreign jurisdictions including New York and California. Our professional experts of the four departments (corporate, banking and capital markets, trademark and copyright, and patent and technology) have been organized in more than 20 practice groups, namely: Corporate and Investment, Merger and Acquisition, Banking and Finance, Capital Markets (including Securities and Privatization), Insurance, Tax, Labor, Medical and Pharmaceutical, Fair Trade, Real Estate and Construction, Government Contracts, Communications and Media, Constitutional Law, Civil Litigation, Administrative Litigation, Cross Border Litigation, Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution, Business Litigation, Criminal Law, Patent Prosecution and Maintenance, Patent Enforcement, Trademark and Copyright.

In response to the needs of our rapidly growing Japanese clientele, we have organized a Japanese task force. Members of this task force are highly proficient in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese and have the capability to support the needs of Japanese multinationals in every aspect of their business operations in Taiwan. As an increasing number of clients are making significant investments in mainland China, we have also established a supporting legal network there. Our P.R.C. practice team works with experts in our Taipei head office and our alliance firms in Beijing to provide intellectual-property-related legal services, and in Shanghai to provide general business consulting services. Our P.R.C. practice team boasts members fluent in English, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese.
