Practice/Industry Group Overview

We have represented agricultural producers since Orville Freeman began his law practice with us. He later became three-time Governor of Minnesota and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson.

Today, Lindquist & Vennum is one of the nation's top law firms, representing the interests of agribusinesses and cooperatives.

Services Available

We continue to assist traditional agribusiness clients, but we are also helping to shape and develop the "value-added" movement in agriculture, created by agricultural producers seeking new markets for their commodities through ownership of processing and distribution facilities.

Value-added projects have resulted in:

  • Sugar beet farmers owning and operating a sugar company
  • Corn farmers owning and operating an egg production and distribution company
  • Cattle producers owning a partial interest in a meat packing company
  • Wheat farmers owning and operating a pasta production business

We are heavily involved in assisting in the development financing and construction of ethanol plants around the U.S. and the development of bio-diesel fuels production.

With the group's longstanding history in the development of grain handling, organizational structure, debt and equity funding, and agricultural transactions, the group's attorneys are commonly sought for business development advice as well as legal advice.

Our attorneys' demonstrated expertise in trend-setting projects, and our clients' successes in these ventures have led to recognition and referrals from various state government agricultural officials and lenders.

We don't just serve agriculture. We are active members in and presenters at national and local agribusiness groups and trade associations, such as the Renewable Fuels Association, National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, National Cooperative Business Association and the National Society of Accountants for Cooperatives.

We put together individuals and teams of experienced attorneys to meet the specific needs of a project. Individual expertise is available in agricultural and cooperative law, commercial transactions, securities, tax, finance and related disciplines.
