    Biography

    Mac practices in the Labor & Employment Law section, representing management and employers with respect to any and all labor and employment matters arising out of the workplace. Mac routinely provides advice to clients concerning all employment-related issues in an effort to avoid litigation and union organizing efforts. He also handles charges, investigations and litigation involving matters arising under all state and federal laws and statutes. With respect to state matters, he handles claims/litigation in all state courts (circuit and appellate levels) involving matters relating to workers' compensation, retaliatory discharge under the Workers' Compensation Act and unemployment compensation claims. Other state matters he handles include any and all tort claims in the employment context, including wrongful discharge, breach of contract, fraud, tort of outrage, invasion of privacy, assault and battery, false imprisonment, defamation, drug and alcohol-related issues, covenants not-to-compete, restraint of trade, trade secrets, the Alabama Age Discrimination Act and any and all claims arising out of the employment relationship. He also prepares handbooks and drug and alcohol testing policies for clients and gives advice to employers with respect to all issues arising out of the workplace.

    Mac handles matters before the National Labor Relations Board, the Department of Labor (Wage and Hour, OSHA, etc.), the Office of Federal Contract Compliance (OFCCP), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and all state and federal courts. The subject matter of these cases and investigations includes the following: Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (sex, race, religion, national origin, etc.), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Civil Rights Act of 1991, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Employee Polygraph Protection Act of 1988, the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act and any and all other federal statutes involving the employment relationship.

    Mac has presented numerous seminars on labor and employment issues. He is a member of the American Bar Association's Sections of Labor Relations, Litigation and Tort and Insurance Practice. He is also affiliated with the Birmingham Bar Association and is a past member of the Alabama State Bar's Board of Bar Commissioners. Mac is a member of the American Counsel Association, Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, International Association of Defense Counsel and the Defense Research Institute. He is also listed as one of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Labor and Employment Law.

    Mac received his B.A. in 1972 from Vanderbilt University and his J.D. in 1975 from the University of Alabama. During law school, he was a member of Phi Delta Phi and Bench and Bar. Mac served as a Law Clerk to The Honorable J.Foy Guin, Jr., U.S. District Judge, Northern District of Alabama, from 1976-1977 and served as an Attorney with Region 21 of the National Labor Relations Board from 1977-1979. He is admitted to practice before all U.S. District Courts in Alabama, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
