Practice/Industry Group Overview
Government & Regulatory
Protecting Clients’ Interests in an Increasingly Regulated World
The regulatory environment is becoming more rigorous for businesses everywhere, with government involvement and oversight in almost every industry and sector. Frustration, cost and complexity have increased as compliance has become more difficult and expensive. As federal, state and local governments continue to add new regulations and stricter enforcement actions, it’s more important than ever to have a partner who can help companies understand, anticipate and quickly respond to the widening range of regulatory challenges.
At Manatt, we’ve successfully advised, guided and represented clients in areas where law, business and government intersect. Our Government and Regulatory Practice features top-level professionals in Washington, D.C., California (including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento) and New York (including New York and Albany), whose focus is to protect the vital interests of our clients in administrative and legislative hearings, rulemaking and regulatory proceedings, government contracts, government assistance agreements and lobbying efforts.
Our competitive advantage is the ability to collaborate with colleagues throughout Manatt’s national network of offices, drawing on the firm’s comprehensive resources to develop broad-based solutions to clients’ complex business challenges. We merge the practical experience of our attorneys with our other professionals who understand public policy and government inside and out. Combining knowledge of government with sound business judgment, we help clients develop strategic approaches to the legal, governmental and political issues that impact our clients’ operations.
Government Experience and Credibility That Give Clients an Advantage
We know how government works and—more importantly—what makes government processes work to the advantage of our clients.
Manatt’s Government and Regulatory Practice professionals draw upon their years of experience gained in elective offices, service on legislative and executive staffs, and in senior positions at every level of government. Among our ranks are professionals who have served in all areas of local, state and national government.
We use this experience and practical knowledge to maintain ongoing contact with members of Congress and their staffs, officials at the executive branch departments and agencies, as well as with state and local authorities. As a result, we are able to effectively communicate our clients’ interests and concerns directly to those responsible for policy decisions on the issues that are most important to them.
It’s been said that all politics is local and, the fact is, the majority of laws affecting businesses today are not made in Washington, D.C.—they’re made in the state capitals, county seats and city halls across America. As a result, a considerable part of our government and regulatory counsel involves state and local governments. There, too, our professionals have a background of extensive service that translates into effective access and impact for our clients.
Private Sector Prowess
Our depth of experience extends into the private sector, with professionals who have worked for nonprofit organizations, publicly and privately owned companies, as well as trade and professional associations. Members of our team have served as senior executives, general counsel and board members for companies in energy, entertainment, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, real estate, construction and numerous other industries. Knowledge of the environment in which our clients operate gives us an understanding of what drives their business decisions, and allows us to facilitate those decisions in the public policy arena.
