Marguerite C. Walter is a counsel in the International Dispute Resolution Group of the firm's Washington, D.C. office.
Her practice focuses on international arbitration, particularly investor-state arbitration matters. She has experience in handling investment disputes before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), including claims asserted under the Dominican Republic - Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). She has also handled disputes brought under the rules of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Prior to joining the firm, Marguerite served for four years as an Attorney-Adviser in the Office of the Legal Adviser at the United States Department of State, where she had significant responsibility in the representation of the United States in two multi-billion dollar claims before the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal. She was also responsible for advising the Department on matters involving investment disputes of U.S. nationals with foreign governments in Latin America and elsewhere.
Marguerite is proficient in French, having lived in France for two years while completing postgraduate work in French literature prior to law school. In 2002 and 2004, she served as a Recording Secretary for two Special Commissions of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, helping prepare the official minutes of each Special Commission in English and French.
She delivered a paper on current trends in Asian investment agreements at the annual Juris Conference in Washington, D.C. in 2010, and has published articles on investment arbitration and private international law.
