Mark D. Stuaan is a partner in the Indianapolis, Indiana office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP and is a member of the firm's Litigation Department. He focuses his practice in white collar criminal defense in state and federal district courts. Before joining Barnes & Thornburg, Mr. Stuaan was an assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of Indiana for more than 10 years. He was assigned to the Criminal Division in the United States attorney's office in Indianapolis and handled a number of prosecutions and appeals. Prior to joining the U.S. attorney's office in Indianapolis, Mr. Stuaan was an assistant United States attorney for the Central District of Illinois where he handled civil, criminal and appellate matters for approximately five years. In addition, he served as a law clerk to then Chief Judge Robert D. Morgan, United States District Court, Central District of Illinois, and worked as an associate for two law firms in central Illinois. Mr. Stuaan received his B.A. from Wabash College in 1978 and his J.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1981. He served as editor-in-chief of the SIU Law Journal and was selected to the Order of Barristers. Mr. Stuaan served as general chair of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association's Committee on Criminal Law and Procedure for 2007-2008 and will continue to serve as the Indiana Chair for the Committee on Criminal Law and Procedure for 2011-2012. He was appointed by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels to the Board of Trustees for the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and serves on the Victim Services Sub-Committee for the Institute, and served on the Indiana Environmental Crimes Task Force as an appointee by Governor Daniels. Mr. Stuaan also served on an advisory committee to the Governor's Council on Dangerous and Impaired Driving. He is a member of adjunct faculty at Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis, teaching a class on white collar crime during the 2012 spring semester. Mr. Stuaan is a member of the Appellate and White Collar Crime Practice Groups at Barnes & Thornburg, the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Association. Mr. Stuaan is admitted to practice in the states of Indiana and Illinois.
