Mark J. Kalla is a partner in the Minneapolis office of Barnes & Thornburg, and a member of firm's Finance, Insolvency and Restructuring Department. Mr. Kalla focuses his practice on bankruptcy and workout matters, documentation of asset-based loans, corporate bond defaults, representation of various entities in commercial disputes and including debtor-in-possession financing.
Mr. Kalla represents corporate and individual clients alike including various business organizations lenders, municipalities, railroads, and farm-related entities. His experience includes work on Midwestern bankruptcies, as well as national bankruptcies in Delaware, New York, Texas, Illinois, California and various other locations.
Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Mr. Kalla was a partner with the Minneapolis firm of Dorsey & Whitney LLP. He has also served as a bankruptcy clerk for the Honorable Dennis D. O'Brien. Mr. Kalla earned his B.A. from Saint John's University in 1980, and his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1984.
Mr. Kalla often speaks to various audiences on the topics of bankruptcy and lending, and has authored articles for trade publications. He belongs to the American Bar Association, the Hennepin County Bar Association, where he is an arbitrator, and is a member of the Bankruptcy Section of the Minnesota Bar Association, having previously held the offices of chair, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary and having been an editor of the section's Bankruptcy Bulletin. Mr. Kalla is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and has been a member of the Turnaround Management Association.
