    Biography

    CONCENTRATION

    Matt is an associate of the Davis Brown Law Firm. He joined the Business Division in August 2011 with a practice that focuses on intellectual property. Matt is a registered patent attorney, able to practice in front of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

    ACADEMICS

    In 2011, Matt received his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. While attending law school, he was a member of the Intellectual Property Law Society, Equal Justice Foundation, a founding member of the Iowa Medical Innovation Group and a writer for the Journal of Corporation Law. Matthew also received the Joseph F. Rosenfeld scholarship, the Harold C. Nichol Memorial Scholarship and the Dean's Award for Academic Excellence.

    Matt earned his Master of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Iowa in 2004. While at Iowa, he received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) training grant and became a member of the Society for Neuroscience. He also has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Grinnell College.

    OF NOTE

    Matt competed in the 2010 Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition, the 2011 Cardozo/BMI Entertainment and Communications Law Moot Court Competition, and was an Appellate Advocacy student judge. He also served as a student judge for the C. Edward Moore moot court competition at Drake. Matt will be a judge at the IP Moot Court at the University of Iowa and Drake.

    Prior to entering law school, he conducted research at Northwestern Medical School and the University of Notre Dame. As a graduate student at Iowa, his research focused on Alzheimer's Disease.

    As an undergraduate at Grinnell College, Matt majored in Biology and was a National Merit Scholar, Trustee Honor Scholar, Capstone Independent Student Researcher and a Pew Foundation Researcher. He also studied sculpture and printmaking and was the editor-in-chief of The GUM, the Grinnell College humor magazine.

    MEMBERSHIPS

    Matt currently serves as the Treasurer of the Iowa Intellectual Property Law Association. He is also a member of the PCBA Young Lawyers Division and the Iowa Association for Justice.

    COMMUNITY

    Matt has also been involved with several community service groups including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity and Middle School Mentors. He actively participates in many local events including Tech Brew, Pitch and Grow, Iowa BIZ, Start-up Drinks, ThincIowa, and other Start-Up City events, Young Professionals Connection events and the Iowa Impact! Medical Innovation Summit.

    PERSONAL

    Matt was born in Lafayette, IN, but was raised in Anamosa, IA. He enjoys spending his free time with his wife Jen, cooking, traveling, watching baseball and movies and playing golf.
