Matthew S. Steinberg, a business litigator and a founding shareholder of the Los Angeles office, has 30 years of experience representing businesses and individuals in major commercial disputes. Mr. Steinberg represents both plaintiffs and defendants in all aspects of litigation from pretrial through trial and appeal. He has received several major jury verdicts, including two in excess of four million dollars. Several of Mr. Steinberg's cases have resulted in reported decisions making appellate law in both Federal and State courts.
Mr. Steinberg recently scored a major trial victory. On January 16, 2009, the Los Angeles Superior Court handed down a decision in favor of a Greenberg Traurig corporate client sued in a California consumer class action based on the Unfair Competition Law. The suit sought $247 million in restitution against our client and a co defendant for the alleged failure to test a particular brand of seat belt for a dangerous condition known as "partial engagement". Greenberg Traurig was hired to try the case after it had been certified by the court as a class action on behalf of 3.5 million California consumers. Mr. Steinberg headed the Greenberg Traurig trial team. After a three week trial, the court rendered its decision finding for defendants on all issues.
In the area of intellectual property, Mr. Steinberg's experience includes a successful jury verdict for misappropriation of trade secrets involving theft of computerized data.
