Professional Experience
Matthew is an associate in the firm's Commercial Litigation department where he practices primarily in the areas of Insurance and Reinsurance Disputes. Matthew represents insurers and reinsurers in Connecticut state and federal courts, New York state and federal courts, and in arbitration on a variety of matters involving claims under general liability, property, automobile, life, workers' compensation, and health insurance policies, as well as treaty and facultative reinsurance contracts.
Representative Matters
· Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a life insurance company on claims alleging breach of contract, conversion, fraud, violation of the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act, and negligence related to the alleged theft of a policyholder's investment funds by her financial advisor
· Won an award of $2.8 million, including attorneys fees, on behalf of a ceding company in an arbitration involving catastrophic workers' compensation claim
· Part of a team that successfully defended an appeal of an order approving the merger of two publicly traded health care insurance companies
· Part of a team that initiated a successful constitutional challenge to the application of state lobbying laws to a religious organization
· Represented an automobile insurer in an uninsured motorist claim alleging breach of contract, bad faith, and violation of the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act and Connecticut Unfair Insurance Practices Act
· Represented a Fortune 100 computer company in several claims alleging violation of the Connecticut Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
