The firm is one of the oldest firms in southeastern North Carolina, beginning its practice as Sanford, Phillips, McCoy and Weaver in 1955. Terry Sanford became Governor of North Carolina, a U.S. Senator and President of Duke University. Dickson Phillips became Dean of the University of North Carolina School of Law and later a Judge on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. The firm has consistently been listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers.
