Biography

Michael J. Remington has over 30 years of experience in intellectual property law (copyrights, trademarks, patents and semiconductor chip mask works), legal reform, government relations and lobbying. For nine years, he was chief counsel of the Judiciary Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives on Intellectual Property and Judicial Administration.

Intellectual Property. Mike served as counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives for enactment of over twenty public laws including the Semiconductor Chip Protection Act of 1984, the Government Research and Development Patent Policy Amendments of 1984, the Berne Convention Implementation Act of 1988, the Satellite Home Viewer Act of 1988, the Trademark Law Revision Act of 1988, the Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act of 1990 and several significant patent law amendments including the Process Patent Amendments Act of 1988. He was also a member of the U.S. Delegation for the Working Groups and the Diplomatic Conference on an International Treaty with regard to Integrated Circuits, World Intellectual Property Organization (W.I.P.O.). He served as a consultant to W.I.P.O. and the United Nations on copyrights and developing countries in Asia and South America. Mike is a member of the advisory board of the Bureau of National Affairs' Patent, Trademark and Copyright Journal, and he served as staff to the National Information Infrastructure Advisory Council during the Clinton Administration.

Legal Reform/Government Relations. Mike is the former director of the National Commission on Judicial Discipline and Removal, an entity established by Congress to study and report to the president, chief justice and Congress on issues relating to judicial misconduct and impeachment. He served as counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives for numerous laws improving the administration of justice. He was an advisor and liaison to the Federal Courts Study Committee, and has received certificates of commendation from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. Mike also has been elected secretary of the European Institute, the world's leading forum for promoting European-American relations. He has testified before Congress on several occasions, including on measures enacted into law.

In General. Mike's clients include a performing rights organization comprising thousands of songwriters and music publishers, a prominent university foundation involved in technology licensing, major bio-pharmaceutical trade associations, a national coalition of photographic industry and photofinishing interests, a printing industry association, several computer software companies, electronic commerce enterprises and individual authors and creators. He has served as an expert witness on legislative history in several patent and copyright cases. Mike is a member of the board of trustees of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. A former Peace Corps Volunteer in Cote d'Ivoire and a former Fulbright Scholar in Paris, France, Mike is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Order of the Coif), where he received his law degree in 1973. Prior to joining Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP in 1996, Mike was a partner with a Washington, D.C., law firm. He is admitted to practice in the State of Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
